It's bewildering to me and I'm in the business.

Most astonishing is seeing the techniques of credit card marketers applied to high school kids - in one week we had 3 pieces arrive in the mail that all had something in common - the promise of a special, exclusive level of access. They use that trick of printing a special username and password to make you believe you’re special. That they’ve reserved a special place for your application, and if you act now… The sad part was explaining to my son that he wasn't being singled out by a school he aspired to apply to, that two other schools that same week sent pitches that probably came from the same lead generation mill - they just changed the language, moved things around on the letter, but side by side it was obvious.

The net result was that my son realized a school that was on his list had descended to the level of pre-approved credit card jackal, and they probably don't even know it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08956533261882382189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-67286519271879604222017-10-03T09:15:38.559-07:002017-10-03T09:15:38.559-07:00I'm also glad your back and alive...missed you...I'm also glad your back and alive...missed your perspective!! We are a graduate school and our applications are through a central service for like schools so we are at the mercy of our app service. But it still seems odd to me that students would want to apply for something as major as college on a device that has a, what, 2x3 screen? How do you input ALL of your information on a device like that. Schools attended. Courses, majors, grades. Some of this is also submitted by the schools but the students, I believe, ALSO have to submit it. Then there are the personal statements. Letters of recc, etc. All of that seems much easier w/ a full keyboard and a bigger screen.Dee Bolinghttp://sph.tulane.edunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-31987546712091102002016-07-20T18:36:28.680-07:002016-07-20T18:36:28.680-07:00Essays...

How can we expect ANY mobile user to not struggle with writing anything of length... with their thumbs?

Are essays not a fundamental part of applications? If they are, shouldn't changing application processes be the start of producing a mobile friendly application?

So when we fundamental change what makes up an application, will we then need to fundamental change our criteria for acceptance?

While I agree that mobile friendly applications should be implemented for increased availability and usability... for all segments of the population, I would argue that applications are a symptom of the problem, not a cause.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-21286570911526162752016-06-30T11:41:50.625-07:002016-06-30T11:41:50.625-07:00Hello,

About that time thousands of well-educated Russians were flowing into the U.S. each year and at the same time Russian departments, both at university and secondary level, were shrinking in the U.S., so there was a definite lack of positions to apply for. SO, after working out of my field in a support position at one of the universities mentioned for a few years, I decided to do as the Russians had done--get myself off to a foreign shore, and I became an ESL teacher in Tokyo; within a 25-year period of teaching in that stimulating megalopolis, I also sneaked away to Moscow to teach English there for a semester. I adore Concordia College and am, in the current crisis, in contact with my Latin professor emeritus there, who still goes to campus every day. One problem, I think, IS that so many of us graduates are thoroughly idealistic and teachers, as the analysis mentions, and, therefore, we have exceedingly little money to give to Concordia. I would like to see the current president at Concordia replaced ASAP!! Concordia's strength has BEEN outreach, international/intercultural communication, let's even say love for the planet and all its inhabitants, and this should not be tossed away. "Concordia" is still a nice name, even if among many: I always say "the Concordia in Moorhead, Minnesota." It should stay loyal to its Christian and Scandinavian roots, in my opinion; why not be itself?? It does have a brand and should not abandon it. As far as employment is concerned, if you choose liberal arts, that in itself is being courageous. Just start job hunting globally and you will do fine.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-80846767412890949462016-02-07T14:56:17.458-08:002016-02-07T14:56:17.458-08:00During the 1988-1989 school year, I had the good f...During the 1988-1989 school year, I had the good fortune of being able to participate in Concordia College's "Institute of German Studies." It was a total immersion program, and at the time Middlebury was the only other place that offered such a program. Concordia utilized the German Language Village facilities during the academic school year to hold classes for which students received college credit. Could somebody provide the date when this program was discontinued? I think it was around 1994 or so.

After obtaining my German major at the I.G.S. I spent a year abroad in Tübingen, Germany. Upon returning I was disappointed at the lack of interest in what students had experienced through this program.

From my perspective, the seeds of eliminating the German department were already planted. As far as I know, Concordia did not have any formal program in place to utilize German majors in promoting the program to new and prospective students. Perhaps if they had, enrollment would have increased.

Speaking to your point about the insufficient endowment fund, and the current need for more high paid alumni; I would like to say that my recruiter sold me on Concordia by saying they have a 99% placement rate, that Concordia takes care of their own and there is a pool of alumni that want to hire Concordia graduates, and they had an internship program that was second to none. If this had been true, perhaps there would be more high income alumni and fewer disgruntled ones.

You stated that one of the reasons for discontinuing numerous Liberal Arts departments had to do with the lack of employment opportunities for people with these majors. What if this was a self-fulfilling prophecy that Concordia created? The Placement Director told me during my Senior year that it was not his job to find employment for students. Perhaps if the college had fulfilled on its recruitment promises, this imaginary proactive initiative to place Liberal Arts Majors in suitable jobs would have served as an example of how valuable a Liberal Arts education is.

As it was, there was no post-educational guidance, counseling or education about how and where a Liberal Arts college graduate should look for suitable employment. My personal feeling is that they got my money, and that is all they cared about.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09704292765770342694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-44198997933716238302016-02-06T14:17:19.825-08:002016-02-06T14:17:19.825-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09704292765770342694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906275473391222317.post-81913691157912264192016-02-02T12:58:21.952-08:002016-02-02T12:58:21.952-08:00Thanks for the analysis.
